In Scotland, the game season starts on the ‘Glorious 12th’ (Aug) with Grouse.
Driven Grouse can be expensive, so why not try ‘walked up’ instead – you do need to be fit though!
1st Sept sees the Partridge and Duck and Goose seasons start and on the 1st Oct, Pheasant season comes in.
The season for Game birds end on 1st Feb.
‘Walked-up’ shooting days have become increasingly popular. These are known as knock-about or rough days and will include a mixed bag of birds such as partridge, pheasant, woodcock, duck and pigeon.

Deer Stalking Packages
The following specially designed packages are developed to suit everyone from beginners to experienced deer stalkers. We have some fabulous estates over which you can stalk in the Scottish Borders. Our estates feature all year round deer stalking for Roe deer.
Experienced hunters may bring their own rifle or use one of our quality estate rifles (POA).
Bespoke packages for UK and overseas clients can be put together at short notice. These can include superior accommodation, fine dining, airport/railway transfers and UK hunting permits. A typical outing Deer Stalking lasts 3-4 hrs (depending on time of year) and currently costs £125-00 per person with a £60-00 fee upon the successful shooting of a deer. If a deer is foul shot and has to be tracked and dispatched, the kill fee will still apply. If you require butchery and the venison it is £60.00. We also offer Deer Stalking Packages and Training Courses especially developed for beginners. The deer stalking itself takes place at one of our picturesque private estates, either at first light or at dusk and is predominantly carried out on foot, with some periods spent in ‘high seats’ or at static points if required.
We want you to have an enjoyable, exciting and memorable outing deer stalking and so are very happy to accommodate your needs. We aim that all deer stalking should be carried out in a safe, relaxed and friendly manner. However we also aim to be professional and humane and will strive to stalk deer according to Best Practice Guidelines for Deer Management.
Finally, we will do everything we can to ensure that you are successful however we are proud of the fact that all our deer are wild and free ranging and as such no guarantee can be given as to success.
Introduction to Deer Stalking Package @ £195.00 per person.
This introductory package is ideal for anyone wishing to learn more about the basic principles of deer stalking and is compulsory for beginners when booking a stalking package. It includes Rifle Craft – tuition on safe rifle handling and best practice, practice shooting using full bore, deer calibre rifles at our deer targets with training on shot placement and bullet flight over varying distances, ammunition and stalking techniques, plus 1 to 1 instruction.
Simulated Deer Stalking @ £225.00 per person
An incredible way to put to use the skills you have been taught if you do not fancy shooting live quarry, but love to rifle shoot.
Stalk your simulated quarry and prepare each shot as you would the real thing on lifelike targets of fox, deer and other species at varying distances, using the bipod and shooting prone, or off the sticks standing and seated and using other resources to create a good ‘lean’.
4 stalks at varying distances, prove your shooting skills by demonstrating accurate shot placement as taught earlier.
Includes all ammo, gun hire and stalking kit.
Certificate upon completion.

We are situated in Smailholm Mains, near the grounds of Mellerstain House and within walking distance from Smailholm Tower and Floors Castle. Shooting in the Scottish Borders ensures an enjoyable and friendly day out.
In the evenings, Kirsty will cook meals on request, using delicious local farm produce such as chicken, beef, lamb and turnips.
